Clipper Card travels!

Recently, I have decided that I want to begin taking day excursions around the San Francisco Bay & Santa Cruz/Monterey areas. I thought it might be fun to work up photos and adventures on my blog. I think that my first day trip will be to the California Academy of Sciences. This will be on a Saturday when I don't have a music lesson, probably the 4th or 5th Saturday of the month.

Learning the Runkeeper app

Getting ready for a Santa Clara retrospective, starting soon!

I have learned about a Runkeeper app, and have decided to walk and catalog the streets of Santa Clara. I will upload photos and map images as I go along.

This photo was taken this morning, at the corner of Rincon Ave. and Milton Ave., in Campbell, CA.

The map shows the corner of Rincon and Milton at the top left. The Runkeeper app allows you to export their maps in Google Earth format (kml). The screenshot was then taken with my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 phone.

Hey man, I've heard you sold your dreams

Collected lyrical poems of Benjamin G. Dubel (2011)

Benjamin is a self-taught guitarist, plays by ear, and has composed lyrics and music since his early teen years.

This collection of poetry was largely written in 1999, when the author was 17 years old. He shows a depth of feeling and maturity which far exceed his age. The poems are moving, and heartfelt. The editor feels that there is an authentic quality to the writing which will resonate with many readers.

Here are two examples from the collection of 130 poems:

Poem 1

There are times I find myself sitting here wondering,
if I ever see you again someday, could you forgive me?
Even though it seems like you are so far away these days
I look back now just to see I’ve been left behind …
and if I could ever stand back up after falling down
I know things would be different this time around.

Well, I guess this is where I stand now before you
forever guilty as sin, for everything I’ve done.
But what difference does that make now anymore
there’s a part of me that’s dead inside …
knowing only memories, my mind keeps going blank
as the thoughts of you wash away this time around.

2004

Poem 2

* "Dreams"

Hey man … I hear you sold your dreams.
Why did you run down the wrong path?
Life isn’t as hard as you think it seems,
it’s always easier to look back and laugh.

Are you mad ‘cuz there’s no one to blame?
Were you hoping that we would listen?
I’m sorry that this happened, it’s a shame.
There’s a way out but something is missin'.

Hey man … I tried to tell you
but you were always never around.
It’s a shame you had to go and let
the best years of your life get you down.

So look at you now, is this where you stand?
Why do you keep your mind in prison?
You had so much going for you as a man
but it looks like you have lost your vision.

Hey man … you know I cried for you
but no one ever seemed to care.
Nothing anyone can say will correct the past,
so I just hope you’ve found your way there.

April 29, 2010 Bought a MacBook Pro computer Tuesday

Wow, I bought a MacBook Pro computer Tuesday! I am so excited about it.

I had pondered buying a new computer for several months. My Dell Inspiron had gotten so slow! I just couldn't get excited about a new Inspiron. It seems that the pc's are fast initially, but slow down quickly when more applications are added. I spend a lot of time grading papers, designing tests, running Mathematica, creating Mobipocket ebooks, and watching movies on Netflix, all at the same time. It was taking over five minutes to boot up the pc, bring up a FireFox browser, and harvest with FarmVile.

My friends at Purlescence Yarns in Sunnyvale recommended that I purchase a MacBook Pro.

So, Tuesday, after working at Safeway in the morning, I drove to Valley Fair and went into the Apple store. I ended up getting MacBook Pro 15" 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3, with the non-glare screen. I had to drive to Los Gatos to pick it up, because they didn't have this screen at Valley Fair.

I have been playing with my new computer for two days, of course. I have had good and bad experiences with the transition. I was able to get a new version of Mathematica software with no problem, but I was a couple of days shy of being able to get a cross-platform transfer for Dreamweaver CS4. I was told on Tuesday that I would not have to pay for an upgrade, but on Wednesday, when I called back, I found out that I would need to purchase CS5 for $250.00! Boy, was I upset. Not only was Tuesday's salesman careless, no one in the company could route me to him with a first name and four digit phone extension.

Oh, well, those are the breaks. I found out that I can use my pc backup cd's on the mac, and am able to utilize all of my Microsoft Office files. The only application which I can't run on the macintosh is Mobipocket, for my Amazon publications. I redid the operating system on my old pc, and now it is running much faster.
